Tomorrow we are off on a grand adventure to visit friend and family in Brisbane for our Easter break. I have decided that our best route will be via the Newell Highway. This route runs from Melbourne, north through central Victoria, central New South Wales and into central southern Queensland where it heads east to Brisbane. This is a country highway that runs through a number of towns that make perfect rest stops however road conditions can be a bit rough and slowing down for every town can be tedious.
I did a Melbourne to Brisbane road trip in September 2016 via the Pacific Highway which runs from Melbourne north east to Sydney and then along the coast to Brisbane. This route has magnificent highways and bypasses almost every town. It is a very easy drive to Sydney, however the traffic into Sydney in evening peak hour, followed by the traffic out of Sydney in the morning peak hour, add time to the trip. The Sydney to Brisbane leg on the Pacific Highway has also been undergoing major road upgrades for the last few years which usually cause some hold ups. In addition this is the first weekend in the Easter school holidays which means that traffic from northern New South Wales to the Gold Coast has the potential to be a nightmare.
So for this trip the Newell Hwy it is.
This is the website for travelling along the Newell Highway including information on accommodation activities and attractions at every town along the way. I am going to be picking up a paper copy of this tomorrow morning as it is a little too long to print at home.
Overall this route is aproximately 1660km.
These are the major towns and distances along the route
Melbourne VIC to Shepparton Vic – 209km
Shepparton Vic to Tocumwal NSW – 78km
Tocumwal NSW to Jerilderie NSW – 59km
Jerilderie NSW to Narrandera NSW – 108km
Narrandera NSW to West Wyalong NSW – 136km
West Wyalong NSW to Parkes NSW – 136km
Parkes NSW to Dubbo NSW – 124km
Dubbo NSW to Coonabarabran NSW – 151km
Coonabarabran NSW to Narrabrai NSW – 118km
Narrabrai NSw to Moree NSW – 99km
Moree NSW to Goondiwindi Qld – 125km
Goondiwindi Qld to Millerman Qld – 137km
Millerman Qld to Brisbane Qld – 208km
I know that in many countries driving these distances is unheard of but Australia is a big country and we love travelling.
We will be doing this trip in 2 days driving with very regular stops for the kids to get out and play. I will be posting route details and pictures each evening. Now to get packing!
